Project overview
CITCOnveyors delivered the complete baggage handling system for the new terminal of Craiova International Airport (CRA), the main air gateway for the Oltenia region in south-western Romania. The equipment was manufactured by CITCOnveyors and delivered to the airport through two integration partners — ERBASU, responsible for the arrivals and check-in area, and MIRA Technologies, responsible for the baggage handling system — with the BHS automation engineered jointly with MAGUS and IESYS.
The departures area integrates 17 check-in positions arranged in single and double islands, each fitted with integrated take-away conveyors that move bags from the check-in desks onto the main transport line. From there, a network of over 300 metres of belt conveyors in 900 mm and 1100 mm widths carries baggage through the terminal, using 45°, 90° and 180° curved modules for compact, efficient routing within the building footprint.
At the core of the system, two parallel diverter lines route hold baggage through multi-level X-ray security screening, automatically diverting bags for inspection and returning cleared baggage to the main flow. Induction points, emergency-stop columns with signalling and a centralized control system ensure safe, continuous operation across the full BHS.
On the arrivals side, the terminal is equipped with five baggage reclaim carousels — four O-shaped units of 32.1 m each plus one 43.5 m carousel — providing generous reclaim frontage sized for the airport's traffic of over half a million passengers per year. Engineered, manufactured and commissioned to international airport standards, the Craiova BHS demonstrates CITCOnveyors' capability to deliver a complete, turnkey baggage handling system for a brand-new terminal.
