Maramureș International Airport
Romania
Project overview
CITCOnveyors delivered the complete baggage handling system and terminal equipment for the new terminal of Maramureș International Airport, Baia Mare — Romania's newest international gateway in the Maramureș region. The project was carried out through general contractor CONCELEX and encompasses the full departures and arrivals baggage infrastructure of the newly constructed terminal building.
The departures baggage system covers the complete processing chain from passenger check-in through to aircraft loading. Ten manned check-in positions are equipped with integrated weigh-in conveyors, each with weight confirmation logic that prevents oversized or non-compliant bags from entering the system. Alongside the manned desks, two Self-Service Bag Drop units allow passengers to deposit their bags autonomously after completing check-in at the dedicated Self Check-in Kiosks — creating a fully self-service flow from boarding pass issuance through to bag induction, without staff intervention in standard flows.
Once inducted, every bag is assigned a unique tracking ID and follows a continuous positive tracking protocol throughout the system, in full compliance with PGDS v7.0. The conveyor network in the departures zone comprises 69 individual conveyor segments and 4 diverters, moving bags through three automated security screening levels. Three 360° ATR automatic tag readers — using SICK/ALIS laser scanning technology — achieve barcode read rates in line with IATA requirements. Bags declared clear at each level are automatically routed to the make-up carousel for loading; bags requiring further inspection are dynamically held on the conveyor network, with the system adjusting belt speeds in real time to allocate sufficient review time to security operators at each decision point.
The arrivals system consists of two baggage reclaim carousels, started and stopped by ground handling staff via RFID card readers, with automated safety shutters and full SCADA integration.
The entire system is supervised by a SCADA platform that provides real-time monitoring and control of all conveyor segments, bag status tracking, alarm management, and reporting. The control architecture is built on dual redundant Schneider Modicon M580 Hot Standby PLCs — in the event of a primary controller failure, the backup unit takes over automatically with no interruption to baggage processing.
Beyond the baggage handling infrastructure, the scope includes a set of custom-designed passport control booths manufactured by CITCOnveyors. The booths feature brushed stainless steel perforated panels, laminated glass with frosted film, and integrated digital lane signage, and were designed to complement the terminal's architectural language — matching the premium interior finish of the newly built facility.
