 Project overview

CITCOnveyors delivered a complete, fully integrated baggage handling system for Târgu Mureș "Transilvania" International Airport in Romania, covering check-in, BHS, and arrivals areas. The project was completed in 2026 through STRABAG as general contractor and represents one of the most technically advanced BHS installations delivered by CITCOnveyors in Romania to date.

The departures area includes 14 check-in desks with custom finishes, 7 dual check-in conveyors, and Self-Service Bag Drop units integrated alongside the manned check-in line. The BHS itself comprises over 61 conveyor units in total — covering check-in conveyors, collecting lines, curved belt conveyors, diverters, and a make-up carousel — designed to process more than 750 bags per hour.

The system is built around a dual-line architecture: a main line for normal baggage flow and a redundancy line that ensures uninterrupted operations during maintenance or peak periods. Integrated screening uses two Nuctech EDS scanners — an XT2100HS on the main line and an XT12080AD on the redundancy line — while bag tracking is handled by three ALIS 360° tag readers and a SCADA system running on two Schneider M580 PLCs in hot redundancy. Each bag is tracked in real time across the entire system.

The installation includes a baggage induction semi-circular strip belt merge conveyor for injecting bags onto the main BHS line, multiple 90° curved belt conveyors, and a high-speed power diverter (zero-gap model) with a throughput capacity of up to 1,000 units per hour. The full system was designed in compliance with PGDS v7.0 (security level 5), the regulation in force at the project's start, and incorporates Maintenance 3.0 principles for predictive servicing. Belt speed is variable between 0.2 and 1.2 m/s, adapted to the operational stage of each segment.
